About Me

{UPDATE:  Successfully defended  PhD dissertation in June, 2010, and moved to Vanderbilt. Will update rest later…}

A Doctoral Candidate  in Computer Science at Arizona State University with  Dr. Hasan Davulcu (advisor).  My Ph.D dissertation focus is Information Extraction and Text Mining from BioMedical Literature.  Check out project BioEve (http://www.bioeve.org/), which is a novel and innovative semantic faceted search engine for MEDLINE abstracts (currently for 1.9 million) powered by BioEve Extraction Engine. It enables faster drug discovery by highlighting important and hidden relationships between disease-drugs-and-genes and will also significantly reduce a biologist/researcher’s time spent doing literature survey and literature review for a disease or gene.  I have designed IE systems and led teams to participate in number of challenges such BioNLP Shared task (2009) and TREC (2005) genomics track.

Currently, I am also contributing to Minerva project with Dr. Hasan Davulcu and Dr. Tom Taylor, check out event thread extraction interface. I led team in designing and developing MAISON project (with Dr. K. Selçuk Candan) accessible user interface/search for individuals who are blind and visually impaired (http://maison.asu.edu). I have also developed Data Rover, an automated agent for extracting product information from shopping portals, and a new technique for boosting item keyword search. And have participated on projects for 3D Motif Mining from Protein Structures and Protein Classification,  For ASU’s School of Human Evolution, I researched and developed an application that enables complex querying over legacy datasets by merging and mapping OWL ontologies (http://cadi.asu.edu/).  Previously I also contributed to Dr. Chitta Baral‘s collaborative bio-curation  project CbioC and AS3 (Adaptable Situation-Aware Secure Service-Based) systems with Dr. Stephen Yau.

My areas of expertise include information extraction,  text mining,  content based recommendation systems,  natural language processing,  machine learning techniques,  information retrieval,  semantic faceted search,  adaptive user interfaces,  data integration,  and work with biomedical ontologies.  I have more than 3 years of project management experience. And I also hold a M.S. degree in Computer Science from Arizona State University and a Bachelors in Engineering (Computer Science) from Osmania University.
